accreditation & affiliation
The Cobb School has a number of accreditations and affiliations with international, national and state associations.
Association Montessori Internationale (AMI)
The Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) is a teacher training organization founded by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1929. The organization’s mission is to preserve Montessori educational standards and promote the rights of the child internationally. The Cobb School is an AMI affiliated school. Every three years an AMI consultant examines and evaluates the classrooms. AMI offers many useful educational pamphlets and resources for parents.
Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS)
The Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) is an association of 95 non-profit independent schools serving 30,000 students in Connecticut and some from other states and countries. CAIS is approved by the Connecticut Board of Education as an accrediting agency and as such evaluates and accredits The Cobb School, Montessori. The Cobb School received its updated accreditation from CAIS in 2008.
CT Department of Education
The Connecticut State Department of Education is the administrative arm of the Connecticut State Board of Education.
Mary Lou Cobb serves on the board of SPHERE, an organization with the following mission: “to help the member schools collaborate in becoming and remaining culturally diverse, inclusive, and responsive environments for teaching and learning. To this end, the member schools, individually and collectively, seek to achieve diversity in faculties, staff, and student bodies, to create within each school and among the member schools a climate of respect for differences, and to encourage multi-cultural perspectives in curricular and extracurricular programs.” The Cobb School is committed to SPHERE’s mission and has representation at both the Deans of Faculty and Diversity Directors committees.
Montessori Administrators Association (MAA)
The Montessori Administrators’ Association (MAA) was founded in 2008 by a group of highly experienced Heads of Schools, including Mary Lou Cobb, representing well-established Montessori schools nationwide. The purpose of MAA is to support the administration of Montessori schools, new administrators, and to address the staffing needs of Montessori schools. In addition, MAA is committed to work in partnership with AMI and the AMI training centers to promote children’s issues and a greater understanding of the Montessori approach to education as an “aid to life.”
Montessori Schools of Connecticut (MSC)
MSC supports Montessori schools in Connecticut by offering workshops, planning sessions and information sharing forums. This is a valuable advocacy organization and an important network for schools and Montessori professionals. Member schools are affiliated with the Association Montessori Internationale or the American Montessori Society. MSC was organized in the 1980s by a group of Montessori administrators, including our Head of School, Mary Lou Cobb.
