Extracurricular Activities

The Cobb School offers regular year-round after school clubs in art and chorus. Other classes are offered for six to eight week periods. Clubs, classes and outings offered over the past several years have been: Spanish club, French class, soccer club, baseball club, yoga for children, Kindermusik, ballroom dancing, woodworking, LEGO club, Explorers' club and skiing. Cobb School parents also run Brownie and Girl Scout clubs at the school.

Service and Outreach

Our students are encouraged to adopt worthy service projects and to design their own ways to raise funds for these good causes. The students have had bake sales and operated a lemonade stand. They have sold their own herb-flavored honeys and handmade jewelry. They have organized food and clothing drives, and toy and book collections. Among the local and national bodies that have been aided over the past several years are the Town Farm Dairy, Foodshare, Circus Smirkus, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Village for Children, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, The American Cancer Society, and the World Wildlife Fund. Our choral group, the Acorn Singers, perform several times a year at local nursing homes and bookstores. Upper Elementary students run an annual picnic in honor of Willem van Gemeren, a former Cobb student who passed away several years ago. The funds raised are donated to The Ruth Josephson Animal Fund and Circus Smirkus. Our Upper Elementary students have also adopted a sister Montessori school in Bhutan. They have raised funds to help purchase Montessori materials and are in regular communication with the school.

Field Trips and "Going Out"

Field Trips:

Our Primary students take several field trips connected to nature study. They have gone apple picking at a local orchard and visited local nature centers. Our Elementary students take class field trips to both historic and natural settings to learn more about topics they are studying in their classes. For example, trips have been taken to Holcomb Farm, Historic Deerfield, Sturbridge Village, Mystic Seaport, The Connecticut Science Center, Talcott Mountain Science Center, and The Pequot Museum. Students also attend performances at the Bushnell, Lincoln, and Warner Theaters.

"Going-Out":

Montessori Elementary students are encouraged to plan trips outside of the school in order to further their research in an area of interest. These trips will involve two or three students who have been working together on a specific topic. The students submit a request to the teacher with a list of questions they wish to research and details regarding the opening hours and admission cost of the place they wish to visit. If approved, they make all other arrangements. Typically, students will visit a specialized museum or travel to interview an expert in a particular field. Students share their findings with the rest of the class, thus inspiring others to “go out”.
